The question of who will acquire the shares if a shareholder or partner dies should be covered in the shareholder/partnership agreement so that nothing is left to chance. If funds are not immediately available to fulfill the agreement, cover can be taken out on each owner to the value of their share in the business. Trusts are then put into place to ensure that funds are in the hands of the correct people should the worst happen.
